Jun 10, 2009 I think if MM was made to work perfectly using Wine/Crossover Office, I'd be happy. I already use CodeWeavers Crossover Office to run Office 2007 (my last) on both Mac and Ubuntu boxes for the times when a stubborn Excel file won't open properly in OpenOffice. There is a parallel push to make MM run natively on the Mac. Install it using Crossover to a Windows 2000 bottle (you'll see that option if you try to install it, do NOT use a Win98 bottle) - DO NOT try to start MM now - install IE6 to that same bottle (from the Crossover Standart applications) - install Windows Mediaplayer 6.4 from the Crossover Standart applications to.

Did you know that when you installiTunes, another program called 'Quicktime' is also installed ontoyour computer, whether you like it or not? Not to mention that theiTunes installer also comes bundled with an Internet browser called'Safari'. You already have Internet explorer and quite possiblyFirefox installed on your computer, why do you need another browser?

Tagging and organizing:

MediaMonkey supports the standardprotocol in regards to file tagging. Tags are important because theycontain the information that tells you what the track is; everythingfrom Artist name, to title, album, and even album art is stored intrack tags. If your database file is ever corrupted or lost (for anyof these 3 programs), all track information not saved in track tagswill be gone.

When changes are made to mp3 tracktags, MediaMonkey will use the standard tag value when available. iTunes would rather create its own standard in many cases. Forexample, volume leveling information (replay gain soundcheck values)are stored in the standard tag location for mp3 tags so that otherprograms and devices are able to take advantage of these values toplay back these files at a leveled volume. When iTunes stores suchvalues, they save the value to a non-standard mp3 tag, so that an 80digit code appears in the mp3 comment tag. You also can't forget thefact that MediaMonkey will tag many filetypes besides just mp3,including: ogg, flac, wma, m4a, m4p, mpc, ape, and wav files. As ofthis writing iTunes can only tag mp3, aac, m4a and m4p files.

Windows Media Player also doesn't fullysupport tag standards, as it won't save album art to track tags. Oneespecially annoying feature of Windows Media Player is that it willautomatically extract and resize album art stored in track tags intothe folder that your music is saved in, and hide the art as a“protected system file”. Of course, with MediaMonkey you canchoose whether you'd like to save album art to the individual tracktags or to a folder – and MediaMonkey will never hide your filesfrom you.
